  1. Phenylketonuria (PKU): PKU is caused by a deficiency of the enzyme phenylalanine hydroxylase, which converts the amino acid phenylalanine to tyrosine. Without this enzyme, phenylalanine accumulates in the body, leading to intellectual disability, seizures, behavioral problems, and other neurological symptoms.
